UCP Benefit Night & More News :)

Hello All!

I hope the month of January has served you well! I’m glad to be starting a new month, a new week and a new semester! I’ve been a little under the weather and out of sorts the past week or two, but the semester is starting back up tomorrow and I feel ready to get back in the swing of things. I have been extra conscious of my health right now because I don’t want any stress to make my cold worse! That is why I have been putting in the extra minutes in the gym or on the beach path…I feel like both cardio and weight work outs for me, are such a reliever of stress, anxiety, or just anything in excess–that includes food, haha.

I’ve got a lot planned for this spring. This semester may just even go by faster than the last. I think it always happens that way when summer is around the corner…although the weather here has made it feel like summer. What a teaser! Next Saturday, I will be speaking at an event in support of raising money for therapy centers at UCP-OC! How awesome does that sound? I am going to post a flyer invite for any locals out there. Anyone who wants to dress up for a casino night of fun while supporting a great cause is welcome! Just take a peek below for more info, or visit www.ucp-oc.org to purchase tickets! I will say that I am a little nervous to get up there on stage to speak about myself and my CP and involvement in the disability community. It is a great honor but I feel so funny talking about myself for ten minutes! Thankfully, Bonner Paddock who is not only a good friend of mine, but an amazing speaker will be there as well to tell his story and that is a great comfort for me. It will be a great first experience; I just hope I can impress upon people how great this cause is, and inspire them to make a difference. :)

In other news, I plan to help put together a team with UCP to run a 5k in May. I think it will be a great way to raise some money, support a cause with some friends, and have fun at the same time! It’s my goal to get some people from Soka to run it with me, and whoever else feels motivated to. :) This run will be a great start to my training for the Surf City Half Marathon that I am going to do a year from today! Yep, that’s right, I’m going to run my first ever half marathon (13.1 miles)! Every year, about 20,000 people come to run along Pacific Coast Highway and I want to join in on the craze this time. I’ve put a lot of thought into it, and I am determined to turn myself into a runner this year. It will allow me to set a great goal for myself and I think it will be a great activity for me to focus on outside of school and everything else. I would not tell all of you guys if I wasn’t serious about it, so I hope to keep track of my training with everyone here on TeenCP. I hope that you will all support me in this, I don’t expect it to be easy and very much fun! I know I will have my days when I’ll complain and cut my legs off haha, but knowing I can be held accountable by having it in writing will be a great motivator for me. Last part of the annoucement, I will be running the half marathon in honor of UCP-OC, so any of you who would like to sponsor me or just donate to my cause I’d be most grateful to. Since this is just a quick first announcement, I hope to have more details to follow in the next couple of months since this is far off. I don’t have any amount in mind as far as how much I want to raise, but maybe with your help I can start to get a feel for just how much is possible! Have any of you out there done any event similar to this, or for a cause? Any advice or tips? I’d like to hear what you have to say! This also means I’d like to look for new running shoes, so any TeenCPers who know a good brand, go ahead and leave a comment. :)

Alright, well I feel like I am forgetting something, but also rambling at the same time.

More news to come on everything…this is just the beginning, here we go TeenCP!

Take care.

TeenCP New Years Weekend Update!

Hi Guys,

So glad that I have the time to get back on here and talk about my latest news to you all. But first, I want to wish you all a happy happy new year! I hope you all were able to celebrate with your family and friends and started your new year off right. Do you have any 2012 Resolutions you’d like to share with us? I plan to write mine down (so they seem a little more permanent, ha!) The weather here has been absolutely amazing here! It’s like a little teaser of summer again– Yesterday, I went to the beach with some friends and ate a delicious local burger joint right on PCH–YUM! Did any of you do anything exciting this past weekend? We never do anything too big out here…just spending time with my family and friends is enough for me. :)

Well anyway, for those of you who don’t know already, I was lucky enough to be interviewed about TeenCP by a great group of people this past Friday. It is for this show called Live Life and Win that airs on channel 11 on Saturday mornings, pretty cool huh? They feature cool teens who are doing something amazing and inspiring, and they asked to have me on the show! It airs in a few months, but I was so flattered to be asked. For me TeenCP has become such a normal part of my life, that I find it funny sometimes that it has become newsworthy. This was my first experience with being formally interviewed about TeenCP and my life by a team of cameras…it was so funny (I don’t know if that is the right word–”awkward” maybe) to me to have two cameras follow me around for a couple of hours asking me about Cerebral Palsy and all that fun stuff. They did a bunch of close ups, and filmed me walking and showing them how my body is affected my CP… I think I did a good job for my first time, although it was a bit nervewracking for me to be asked some questions right on the spot and really put into words how I feel about CP and having created TeenCP. I’m glad I did it though because as I was asked some questions about what inspires me and why I continue to blog, it forced me to reflect and I realized even more how really thankful to have started TeenCP. It is because of you guys that I continue it and I just want you to know how much talking to you all out there really means to me. This has become such an important part of my life and I hope to continue to have the opportunity to share all of this with you, my friends! So a big thanks to Bonner Paddock, Jeff Dolen, and those who are with the Live Life and Win program for wanting to share my story with the nation!

I have added a few new links to my “Resources” section in the past few days, go ahead and scroll over them if you haven’t in awhile! I also wrote a guest blog on a great social networking site called dimmi, that features everything from disabilities to health and wellness and other obstacles that everyday people like us face at some point in our lives.  The link to that will be posted to my “Blogroll” section to the right as well. With the resources section, I just have that there to post not only helpful info for therapies and CP research groups, but also about other people with CP who do incredible and inspiring things! If you have some cool news or CP stars you’d like to feature, go ahead and share with me and I’ll add them to my resources section! I am a true believer in being a team player in the disability community and everyday I am still connecting with some talented and motivational people! So feel free to check out the resources and explore what is really out there. :)

I think that’s all for now–have a fantastic week! P.S. Cool featured photo huh? I took that last night when the fog rolled in downtown by the HB pier :)

TeenCPers, I’m baaack!

Hello Hello! It has been much too long, my fellow TeenCPers, but I have a valid reason…. final exams, end of school activities, graduation… it was all too much fun! I am glad things have slowed down, andit it officially summer as of yesterday! My favorite season of the year :) Congrats to any TeenCP grads this year, how fun! 2011 is a great year so far. I hope things are low key for all of you guys on summer break. And if it’s not, I hope you are off traveling or doing something adventurous and memorable! Now is the time in our lives to be doing something worthwhile (or even doing a whole lot of nothing while we can!)

Hmm so what is on the agenda for July, everyone? Any plans? celebrations? vacations?

I will be spending my 19th birthday traveling around France and Belgium with my sister and friends who are kind enough to show us around. How cool is that? I’ve long antcipated this trip, and it is finally arriving! We leaving LAX on the 4th of July, have a layover at JFK in one of my favorite cities (NYC–too bad we cant stay for some fireworks!) and then we wll be crossing the pond right on into Paris :) Any suggestions as far as places to see in Paris beyond the given tourist attractions? I love little local cafes and vintage stores…

Today I am writing my first blog entry on the OMF website! I am so excited to be writing even more–especially about being a teen with CP and spreading awareness about the true needs of a teen with CP…let’s see how many people we can reach through TeenCP and OMF combined! A little side note, the OM Foundation www.1man1mission.org is a non-profit organization founded by Bonner Paddock (a local OC friend with CP!) OMF is currently working on several projects to create centers for childrens with disabilities around the world. Let’s go help them make that more possible by raising money and awareness for these kids! Any fund raiser is appreciated–a lemonade stand, a fun run with sponsors…you can make a difference too! :)

On another note, I hope all you fathers out there had a great time with your little ones… My family and I went up to Santa Monica/Venice for a nice hike in Will Rogers State Park, which is near Topanga Canyon for those of you who may be more familiar with that name. It was such a great hike…except sometimes I forget how useful a walking stick would be… it gives ya that extra push if one side is a bit weaker. And not even exclusive to having CP–they are just so helpful if you struggle with hills or balancing. A quick question–do any of you have the outside of your foot get really sore after a strenuous work out? I really don’t know how to shake that feeling off…I’ll post some photos…because believe it or not, I brought my camera! (that’s a first :p )

Well, I am off to do a bit of thinking for OMF… let’s hope the sun comes out so I can hit the beach! June gloom, YUCK.

Take care guys, and I’ll be on again soon now that I am school free for a few months.

I have a question!! {and some news!}

Hello hello!

My, My what a wonderful week this has been. I’m telling you guys, going for what you want PAYS OFF! I just received more scholarship money for college (YAY!) and am in the running (fingers crossed–time will tell!) to be on a cover of Seventeen Magazine! How cool would that be! It would be such an accomplishment to be on the cover representing not only TeenCPers, but everyone with something that may have held them back at some point in their life! It has been my favorite magazine for all my teen years…who doesn’t love style and health tips?! I love 17 because when I read it, I always feel good about myself after..not like, “oh gosh I need to improve the way I look, or I need to go out and buy expensive things…” Because 17 caters to the REAL girls out there :)  Check out the “Pretty Amazing” Contest in the latest issue of 17mag, or on the site www.seventeen.com/prettyamazing. What do you guys think??

And as for the question(s) I have… I am wondering if you (if you have CP and are a teenager) let your CP kind of control your lfe–so to speak… does it hinder you from making friends, from doing the things you love? I ask this because I want to know to what degree CP “controls” your life…do you let it? Is it an insecurity of yours? Do you have anything about yourself that you’re insecure about that has nothing to do with your CP? I think that is enough for now, thank you! I hope you don’t mind me asking these types of questions…I guess I just am curious because I have been asking myself these questions for the past few days and they have been turning in my head, and I want to hear a new perspective. Thanks! I appreciate you simply reading over my blog, even if you dont feel comfortable answering questions, who knows–you may find out something new on here that is useful! You guys are all “pretty amazing” yourselves! (ha, get it? the seventeen contest? :p) Enough with my silly jokes already geesh…

Anyway, in the coming months I may be posting about various activities for The OM Foundation–a non-profit organization dedicated to building centers in Africa and the US for peoples with disabilities! How awesome is that? The founder is a good friend of mine, Bonner Paddock. Remember him? The crazy & cool guy with CP who climbed an insanely tall (20,000 ft) mountain in Africa?  He is off to Africa and in mid-training for an Iron Man in 2012…I know, right! So in the meantime I am going to brainstorm to help throw some ideas around about how to really get everyone pumped up for his Iron Man… he is doing this to not only be the first person with CP to finish, but to raise money for the foundation. So since you are all the wonderful people that you are, I urge you to visit www.1man1mission.org and really get a feel for OMF and Bonner! This is a big deal and I think us TeenCPers need to turn it up a notch by having a voice! Let’s get people out there to understand what CP really is…and even for people with CP to know that there is help!! That is the mission of not only OM Foundation, but UCP’s and organizations alike across the world. To go Beyond the Limits…whatever limits those may be (physical, social, mental)…so please, take a second and “like” this page on facebook…. one dollar will go toward these centers! http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/omfoundation

Thanks Guys! I have to knock out some studying…. summer is almost here, yay!

Take care, Happy Wednesday!

Catching up… College, CP Advice, Spring Break (is over!)

Hello hello! Finally getting back into the swing of things back home… time for some homework and family time on this nice Easter Sunday :) Happy Easter for those of you who celebrate today! Oh, and before I forget– I replied to your guys’ wonderful comments on my last post…. I love hearing your experiences with college and how CP may be affected by it all…it’s nice having those of you who do read and are in college, share some advice and stuff because most of what I hear is just from my friends who are in the same boat as me, or from adults who are 20+ years older than me. :p And no offense to them, but it is just nice to hear advice from teens and young adults who have the recent college hindsight AND have CP… double plus. :) So thanks, I really take your words into account…. especially now that I have made my decision!!

I, Katy Lea Fetters will be attending Soka Univeristy of America in August! Me, college?? I love saying that, its just so exciting, relieving, and wonderful all at the same time. It just feels right. I went there early last week with my friend and I just felt like I could really see myself calling this place home. It is an amazing school, (for lack of a better word im just going to continue) that offers an amazing program, with amazing people,  in an amazing place! I was lucky enough to receive a generous scholarship too. I am set!!

I do hope that you all enjoyed your spring break, even if it was weeks before mine…Easter just came late this year! I relaxed in the desert sun a bit, saw some some neat things in downtown San Diego, and now am ready (yet slightly dreading) returning to school….can’t I just be done already?? Haha, I know, I know I am going to try and cherish these last few weeks of high school….but I can’t help it, the future is just too exciting! Graduation in June, Europe this summer, and then I am off to the rest of my life! :p So please forgive me if I sound all too hyped up about 2011 haha. I am sure all you TeenCP seniors know what I am talking about, and the rest of you lovely readers can relate to this feeling in some way or another. Enjoy the rest of April as we spring on into yet another month

Hold tight, and stay happy and healthy TeenCPers…. summer is almost here!

I wrote a poem about the full moon I saw in San Diego, and ended up complimenting it with the sun I saw in Palm Springs… Enjoy :) (Here’s also some pics I thought I’d share)

Ominous moon sits in the sky
Awaiting the nurturing blanket of clouds
That are nowhere near
As the sky is clear,
And the stars are dull

The ominous moon frowns upon the shore
As the tide grows low
And the lunar light dims
A slight sadness fills the southern night
Alright, alright, he says
And glows for us
A soothing sight

Searing sun sits in the sky
Exudes this desert heat
Calm stoic breeze
Invites the shadows with great ease
Ingratiated, do I feel
In the presence of her vibrant existence

The searing sun smiles upon the earth
As the people come to soak up her rays
And envelop themselves in her nurturing warmth
Up in the sky, midday
Too hot, you say?
Alright, alright, she says
I’ll come back some gloomy day

TeenCP Facebook Page?

Helloooo!

My sisters had an idea that it would be fun to do a TeenCP fan page or profile on Facebook. What do ya think? Maybe that way, we could do more discussions and such! Get the word out about Cerebral Palsy and what it really is… to rid of rumors and the possible negative stigma of a having a physical disability. Educating some of our peers, you could say.

Yah or nay?

Summer endings and ongoings

Hi all,
What a beautiful day today! And yesterday was nice as well! I spent the whole afternoon on the beach with my boyfriend and our friends. I’m so glad these last few weeks of summer are starting to bless us with good weather. :)

I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled soon ahhh! This Thursday my sister and I go in :p It should be quite the experience but I am prepared for lots of sleeping, smoothies, and frozen yogurt! Any tips for those of you who’ve gone through with this procedure?

The other day I was walking in the sand at night with my good friend Katelyn and it was super dark…and of course clumsy me falls in a hole right at the shoreline and I almost get soaked! Haha it brought on some good laughs afterwards, thats for sure. Always tripping, stumbling and falling, just another perk of having CP (am I right??) :p

Also, fall soccer starts tonight but I think I am going to have to call it quits this season :/ Between school, college apps, another go at the ACT, and my not so good running skills, I think I’ll manage to get my work outs in at the gym or by myself this time. I’m a bit bummed, but I’ll still be able to go to the games and all that since my sister will be playing. I love soccer but it’s just not something I can pick up on again. Ya know?
Well that’s that, I hope you are having a fun end to your summer vacation as well.
School mode soon, yikes!

Yay for good news!

Hi Everyone!

I hope you all had a fantastic Superbowl Sunday! It was such a fun day here, my mom and sister both ran the half marathon held here every year, and then we hosted a huge party at out house for the superbowl! I’m not much of a football follower, but it was fun seeing everyone get together and have a good time. Did you guys do anything fun this weekend?

I just had my therapy appointment, andI left with such a positive attitude! My therapist measured by flexibility, and since the castings, I have improved tremendously! I almost have my foot at a 90 degree angle, and my ankle improved by 15 degrees, when I flex it. I go back in two weeks for a check  up, and get an update on wearing my brace, and doing my at home stretching. I am so happy, I didn’t realize that the casting did that much for me! I am walking more evenly, and able to exercise still, with a stronger pace and fluency. I can’t wait to keep moving forward and see more improvements on my own! Wish me luck.

I hope you all have a fabulous week, I am about to attack my load of homework since I’ve put it off this weekend, and get these next two Monday’s off with thanks to the past Presidents of our country. Wish me luck for this one too. Haha…I’ll be on again soon!
