Happy St. Patty’s Day TeenCP

17
March

Hi Everyone!

Gosh, what a busy week! I started my new job as a receptionist at a hair salon…and let me tell you, working downtown Huntington Beach (bars galore) on St. Patricks Day is craaazy. People running in and out and the phones ringing off the hook… no wonder why they say girls are better multi taskers! Just kidding :p

I just wanted to stop in an say hi to all my TeenCP friends all over the world! I hope you had a fantastic week, and are looking forward to a great, relaxing weekend. Can you believe it is mid March already? Wow, I sure can’t..pretty soon it will be summer time and I will be off to France for the summer with my sis, yay! Any fun summer plans for you?

Ahh well aside from all the fuss about my busy life…I just went for a jog today, and I have been noticing that the top of my ankle (on my non-cp side) was killing me…I could not tell if it was my bone or muscle aching, but it was in the oddest spot, and the only thing I could possibly conclude is that my right leg is over compensating too much, and now all my different joints are feeling the effects off it. :( I think I should take up a consistent yoga class…that should do the trick. What do you think? Anything you could recommend I do to lessen the pressure on my joints, muscles ectt? It makes me sad that I cannot run the way I used to. Hmm…I think my soreness may also be due to the fact that I went on an extremely strenuous hike this past Sunday. (Pic up top is from the hike–so pretty– the scenery is a part of what keeps me going!) I don’t even know where to begin, I was so not mentally prepared for the inclines and the slippery gravel. But I did it, and I was limping around extra bad the rest of the day…it was worth the accomplished feeling I felt afterward though…because there were some people who were “normal” and they didn’t even finish. So ha! There’s dis-abilityfor all those underestimaters. ;p Haha I hope you know I am not completely serious…but I mean c’mon, you have to admit its at least 3x harder for us CPers to do any sort of physical activity, I can’t help but point out how great I feel when I am more physically able than someone who does not deal with CP. Empowering, almost…to accomplish something unexpected like that. It’s like when I saw the hill before me, I told myself there was NO way I was going to make it…but I surprised myself, and that is the greatest form of self-motivation ever. Have you ever had that moment where you just WOWed yourself? I hope so! It is an incredible feeling to push yourself past failure.

Well, I told myself I would not ramble on, I need some sleep before another busy day begins! Gotta love Fridays though…and speaking of tomorrow, I am going to meet with some great interns from UCP-OC to talk about some media awareness “stuff” for CP. I love to “represent” us teens and be apart of something big like that. How exciting this all is…even if it is just eing able to share my experiences with how this website has come to be what it is today..so honored!

Well, goodnight and stay lucky all you Irish TeenCpers! ;)

Happy Friday & Take Care.

Rainy Day

27
February

Hey Everybody!

Sorry I haven’t posted since last week, school has been crazy this past week, and now I have started soccer!  I am so stoked that we start games March 13th! A bunch of my old teammates came back for spring, and were all happy to be together and just have fun out there. Today is a rainy day, so I think I might catch up on some recorded shows and movies. :) I am reading this one book for my outside reading book for English called A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith and it is really good! The book is about a family (the daughter)  in 1912, living in poverty…I really enjoy the writers style and how the story is laid out, there are a ton of flashbacks and history to the family. Today is a good day to wear my brace since I’ll prob be inside most of the day, might as well get that extra stretch. I went running these past few days to get in better shape for soccer, and it felt so effortless. I was super happy that it wasn’t as hard as it used to be before castings. I run about a 10 min mile, but that is good enough for me..as long as I stay fluent and get the most out of my work out, I don’t care what the clock says. Hopefully tomorrow it will be nice enough to go on a bike ride, those are my favorite. It is so pretty to ride along the beach and watch the ocean, and people interacting and doing their own workouts. Do you guys do any workouts that would be fun to share?

Well I’m going to get movin for the day. Enjoy your weekend!

A New Hike

31
January

Hey all,

Hope your weekend is off to a fantastic start! I know mine is, now that finals are over I can finally relax! I think I did pretty well on them too. :)

Anyways, I am going on this great hike on Monday since it is a student free day, yay! I got a few friends together for what I hope will be a great adventure! It is a new place called Trabuco Canyon about a half hour away, I am anxious to scope it out! It is supposedly a gorgeous place with waterfalls and rocks and cool trails. I’ll let you know asap how it went. I feel prepared for it, physically so I am happy about that. It is nothing harder than what I am used to. Except my foot is a bit swollen. Probably still recovering from being closed up for so long. Nothing a little time wont fix. Gonna stretch like crazy before this hike so I am ready as I can be!

Hope youre all having a great weekend, talk to you soon!

To be, or not to be… physically active!

19
August

Hello out there!!

All this last minute summer homework (yes, I procrastinate :p) has got me all tied up, so I thought I’d take a little break!

So I have talked with a few other out there- Thanks for your comments/emails! Some of you say you, or your family members with CP experience pain, soreness, fatigue on a regular basis (or occasionally.) While I can’t say that I do all too often myself, I do have certain mornings where I get out of bed and I am just SO tight and achy all around my left ankle and foot. Most of the time I can just walk it off or stretch my calf muscle while exerting force against a wall- you know what I’m talking about right? Well usually that helps ease any pain…for those of you that experience greater pain for longer periods or numbness, I suggest you talk to a Physical Therapist so they can tell you what is right for YOU because our CP differs from person to person and our ability levels as well.

Although I will say that staying active has helped me stay not only fit, but strong. I am able to do just about everything my twin sister can, just a bit slower. I love going on bike rides, long walks, but most of all I think that weight training helps me stay equally as strong on both sides of my body, considering I have CP on my left. So maybe re-examine what you do physically and see if that helps. Could you do more stretching (PT, or yoga!) More cardio? Try it out, these new exercises may decrease the frequency and level of pain!

I have another post on the way, now go do your summer homework (if you’re lucky you don’t have any) so you won’t be working ’til dawn like me! ;)

Stay happy and healthy! :)
